    DSpace 7 - Enhanced Submission & Workflow

    The last two years have been very intense for the DSpace community. A great effort has been put into finalizing the development of a DSpace release, 7.0, which has many changes from previous releases, particularly with regard to UI technology. As part of the activities related to the creation of DSpace 7, particularly innovative is the submission and workflow process that can be associated with the different collections. The presentation will provide a deep dive into the new Enhanced Submission and Workflow features of DSpace 7, including how to configure, customize & use this feature (and differences with DSpace 6 and below)

    Building a Semantic Web Digital Library for the Municipality of Milan

    In the second half of 2007 the Municipality of Milan decided to co-finance a one year project proposed by CILEA (Consorzio Interuniversitario Lombardo per l'Elaborazione Automatica) called "Biblioteca Aperta di Milano" (Milan Open Library) or BAMI, aimed at creating an integrated system to make a set of digitized documents from the cultural institutions of Milan available on the Web. To meet the goals of the project, we adopted Semantic Web standards and technologies to build the knowledge base and used a faceted browser for the user interface. Faceted browsing is an exploration technique for structured data sets based on facet theory which allows users to find information without a-priori knowledge of its schema. To store and provide the visualisation of digital documents we used Co-deX[ml] and AriannaWeb. Regarding the selection of content, we decided to focus mainly on the documents that belong to a specific branch of the city's cultural heritage: those from the 19 th century, giving special attention to musical documents. In this paper we present the methodology and the workflow that led us to build an ontology with the aid of a Scientific committee of librarians and 19 th century music experts. We also illustrate the usage of a dedicated web-based editor that we used to populate the ontology. One of the most important objectives of the project was to overcome the limitations of the search engines traditionally used in the librarian domain (e.g. OPAC) by providing the users with new tools for browsing and analysing cultural knowledge. Thus, the paper also focuses on the BAMI User Interface, which was built by extending and enhancing Longwell, a faceted RDF browser developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We then describe the complementarity and flow of information between the three applications

    Extending DSpace to fulfil the requirements of Digital Libraries for Cultural Heritage Management EDIT

    Digital Libraries are continuously evolving platforms aimed at managing, visualizing, curating and preserving a variety of different cultural digital objects, together with their relationships. To build sustainable Digital Libraries, we chose the open source Digital Asset Management System DSpace. To support interoperability and to allow a broad dissemination and re-use of cultural heritage and research results, we built some add-ons to be released as open source: the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) Image Viewer, the Audio/Video Streaming Module and the OCR Module. Managing the relations between digital objects and between them an other entities (such as persons, events, places, etc.) is a key feature, in order to handle every kind of cultural heritage documents. Thus we are also enhancing the DSpace Data Model in order to provide the description of relationships within cultural contexts.

    The road (and the roadmap) for building Trusted Digital Repositories within an Interuniversity Consortium

    Since 1998 CILEA (now merged into CINECA) has been archiving, managing and disseminating digital cultural resources within academic libraries, historical archives and museums. Over the years several solutions have been developed, due to the peculiarities of the resources to be managed and to the continuous evolution of digital preservation paradigms and technologies. From 2008 CILEA provides a Digital Preservation and Curation Service compliant with the major requirements of the OAIS model and, in the last months, started a process of self-audit, following the recommendations of the ISO/DIS 16363 "Audit and certification of trustworthy digital repositories" (the so called "Magenta Book"). In particular two different platforms, including also digital preservation features, were developed for cultural resources. One for Electronic Journals management (NERA) is built upon the open source software Fedora Commons, the other (CodeX[ml]) is aimed at the preservation of digital cultural heritage (mainly ancient books and manuscripts) and was completely in-house developed. The decision of implementing two different platforms is closely related to the different nature of the documents to be preserved. Moreover CILEA has developed also the DigA (Digital Archiving) platform, built upon Fedora Commons, to be considered a Platform as a Service for Digital Preservation. All the Digital Preservation Services, currently managing nearly nine million objects, are continuously improved in order to fulfill the requirements of the Magenta Book. The proposed contribution is aimed at explaining the latest implementations carried out in order to bring CILEA's (and now CINECA's) digital preservation services to the rank of Trusted Digital Repositories (automatic check of data integrity through checksum, implementation of the PREMIS standard, etc.).

    Extending the Digital Archives of Italian Psychology With Semantic Data

    ASPI is a project that aims at creating a digital library of historical documents of Italian Psychology and extending it with semantic data. The extension makes it possible to retrieve archival documents not only on the basis of archival metadata, but also according to the connections the documents have with specific activities of researchers, groups and institutions, as well as with more general events in the history of Italian Psychology. The paper provides an overview of ASPI and discusses the approach and workflow we adopted in its development. In particular, ontology modeling according to CIDOC CRM, ontology population and the prototyping of a semantic search and browsing portal based on the ClioPatria platform are introduced.
